I love to paint!  Hay bales are my subject in this particular painting.  At my Inspire Studio And Art Gallery downtown Shawnee, Oklahoma I tell folks when they come in that I am inspired by different subject matter, but I always go back to subject matter that I loved as I was growing up.  I married a farmer and my life was full for so many years raising cattle, sowing crops, harvest time, and raising children.  Those years were so good.   I reflect on them a lot.  This field of round hay bales were about a mile from our home a few years ago.  I loved the distant hills in the background, the sky, with trees and hay bales in the foreground.  We have a beautiful earth!  Click the links for more information.

Barns are an interesting subject to view as we travel through the countryside. We appreciate their practical use and wonder what kind of animals are kept in them, or what kinds of farm products are stored in them. They tell a story...usually of farmers and families; however, they entertain many who love to view rustic country scenes throughout our nation. I saw this barn as we traveled north to Missouri. The barn was up on a hillside and I snapped it at a perfect time from the car. I was so glad to get the image so that I could paint it later, because I loved the beautiful rustic colors of the fall and earth from down below.  You can purchase a print of this barn by following the highlighted description under the image above.

The sun was setting and there was a glowing back-lit landscape behind them.  I had taken my camera out to photo the chickens right before we put them up for the evening.  These five roosters were prancing in front of the silos and the sun behind them was glowing as it was going down.  I deliberately painted them lighter from the photo I had because in life they showed up so much better; however, as always...painting from a photo never is as good as painting from life.  I enjoyed painting them though and maybe I recreated a little of their prance.  They are listed for sale here.

My son videos cattle for a cattle commission company here in Oklahoma.  He spends a lot of time in Texas and he knows that I love the Texas landscapes in the spring when their wildflower, the Bluebonnet, covers their pastures like a plush carpet.  Recently he brought some photos home and shared them with me.  I was so inspired that I created this painting.  Painting from photographs is never the same as being in the real place painting from life!  The artist misses out on the whole experience and is handicapped in producing the right colors, depth, and values when painting from photo images.  But, I still enjoyed painting this little vignette and remembered the times that I was so impressed with the countrysides of that great state.  It is listed in my Etsy shop.

The inspiration for this little painting came from my daughter-in-law who sent an image to me from her iphone.  She had been out feeding their cattle.  I have a difficult time painting landscapes on small canvases.  I am determined to do some plein air painting this fall.  Painting from life is always more invigorating and satisfying.  I am spoiled with still lifes because I can set them up in the setting of a comfortable studio and they are "still".  I will challenge myself this autumn to paint outdoors!

At our farm in Oklahoma I can go out the back door anytime of the day and observe different patterns of light through the trees in the back yard. I could paint this particular place dozens of times like Monet did on his haystack series, and never tire of the different moods and elements of art that create such exciting compositions.

This is an original oil painting that features five patterned and colorful, little-girl jumper dresses hanging on a clothesline. The inspiration for it came from a fellow etsy seller. Lauren was gracious enough to give me permission to paint it. It reminds me of my mother's clothes line. There were lots of girls in our home. I was especially drawn to the different patterns and colors of these little clothes. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did painting it. This is yet another meadow of black eyed susans that I spotted on a drive to Oklahoma. Through the years my husband has quit being startled when I say “stop” to take a photo! In fact he has begun to be on the lookout with me (smiles). Though the black eyed susan is considered a weed I cannot ever dislike it. The golden carpets they make are so inviting. It is like they are speaking to us, telling us to come….run through them, smell them, touch them, pick them, and enjoy them.

We visit Oklahoma quite often.  We have a farm home there and our grandchildren live just down the road.  One early morning  in the spring I drove some country roads looking for different landscapes to paint. I didn't have time on this particular trip to set up a field easel so I took my camera.  I guess you could call me a visual scavenger (grin).  It had been an especially good year for the wildflowers and I came upon this equisite view of Indian Blanket with several tree lines graduating into the distance of a couple of miles. What a sight! This is one of the paintings that came from the beautiful view that day.

Wildflowers and Black-Eyed Susans

There are some years that wildflowers grow “wildly” and so abundant that they cover the earth as a carpet. These years are so visually exciting. It is like manna (a Biblical term for miraculous food) to an artist. As my husband and I were traveling on a trip to our farm home the black-eyed susans were so abundant that I had to stop several times to take resource pictures. It was enchanting! I never tire of seeing these beauties in my home state of Oklahoma.

This painting features a young British White Cross that was on my son's ranch for a while. I think she is fine and I thought Charlene was a good name for her. She has an innocence about her, don't you think? She is set against a dark red background which seems to accentuate her white coat.
