Small 8x8 Oil Painting - Orange Knobby Gourd With Bright Yellow Sunflower

We will see a change in the seasons soon whether at home, distancing or whatever our activities are.  Autumn is such a beautiful season.  It brings cooler weather for most of us and and we look forward to the beauty of color even though it falls and changes into winter.  We take this color, texture and season into our homes and celebrate harvest.  This small painting can be arranged with leaves as a centerpiece.  It can be hung as wall art.  To see more about the description click "link".  Or, you can click on the Etsy store link in the column to your right to find it.

Blue Creamer and French Cup and Saucer Still Life Painting

8x10 Oil on Canvas
Cheri Wollenberg
Just before Christmas I was looking for a cup and saucer for a still life painting that would look nice in a large custom still life painting I've been commissioned to do.  The buyer wanted something that would look good with French Country Décor.  As I researched the particular décor I found that copper, roosters, sunflowers, and French pottery was usually incorporated in kitchens and dining rooms.  So, I was delighted when shopping in this little Antique shop to find a cup and saucer signed by the French name of Henriot Quimper.  This small still life was a practice composition to work on designs and color before painting the larger composition for my customer.  This painting can be found in my Etsy store here.

A primary color scheme indeed!  I love painting Blue Willow dishes and vessels.  They seem to compliment any subject or color scheme.  Find this painting here in my Chatter Box Art store on Etsy.

Gourds and Gourd Paintings

Green and White Striped Gourd with Black Eyed Susan

6x6 Oil on Canvas

Cheri Wollenberg

Gourds are some of the most fun objects to paint.  Their textures, shapes and colors are endless.  Placing a sunflower or two gives an added interest.  Painting them always puts me in a festive, autumn spirit and scooping up large quantities of paint and applying it on canvas makes me happy Laughing out loud.  These small paintings are listed in my Etsy store.

Sunflowers III

16x20 Oil on Canvas

Here in Fayetteville, Arkansas we have had many weeks of dry and "hot" weather.  Like so many cities and states we have had record-breaking temperatures.  Many states now have had temperatures in three digits for over 30 days.  The sunflower is one wildflower that seems to withstand these temperatures.  They have become wilted and dry, but those beautiful yellow petals still hold a beauty that so many of us cannot resist.  Several weeks ago we were invited to a friend's home to see her son off on a journey that he is taking.  My friend (who is an artist) had decorated the tables and various places in her home with these magnificent flowers that had come from her father's garden.  She shared these particular ones with me and I have started several paintings from photos that I had taken of them in several different compositional stills.  Sunflowers III can be purchased by clicking here.

Sunflower Bouquet in Turquoise Vase

Sunflower Bouquet in Turquoise Vase

This will probably be the last sunflower painting for a while.  I think I'm ready to move on.  I need to put a glaze over the reflection in the table.  It is a bit too harsh and bright.  I had trouble getting the colors true in the image with my camera.  The vase actually has a little more green in it.  I thought my light was too cold so I moved it to some warmer artificial lighting, but it still came out too blue.  I'm thinking I'm going to have to get my camera instructions out again and see if I have done something with the settings.

Sunflowers II

Sunflower I
6x8 Original Oil on Canvas
by
Cheri Wollenberg
Sunflowers defined are tall plants with yellow-petaled blossoms.  They are much more to artists!  They capture our eyes with their extremely warm and brilliant yellow petals that range from green yellows to rusty golden yellows.  They are in no way timid...they are wild and boldly attractive to us.  They tease us with different anatomy and design.  Their petals are sometimes wide and overlapped as opposed to slender and sparse.  Some of them have very dark, almost black, seedy centers while others have brown, green, or gold centers.  They all seem to have those grabby rough leaves which somehow reflect the sky as we examine them from a distance.  In Oklahoma the sunflowers grow up from red dirt which makes them more attractive than ever.  The reds complement the greens so beautifully.  We artists, like Van Gogh cannot help from trying to capture and express their image.   Oh my, what a privilege we have as painters to try to emulate with brush on canvas this excellent natural plant,
a gift from God the Creator.
