Sunflowers II

Sunflowers II
12x24 Original Oil on Stretched Canvas

Cheri Wollenberg
I have been stuck on sunflowers lately. I painted some from life and then I had so many reference pictures that I kept on painting them.   If you are interested in purchasing this painting, follow this link:

I understand that I can become a better painter by studying the work of masters. So, I have spent these last minutes studying this sunflower. What makes the leaves so natural... There's a blue reflection that makes a harmony with the sky. What makes the petals look so connected to the center...There's an orange tucked in there to move them deeper into the picture at their bases. What makes the others look like they're further down the row... They aren't as brilliant, defined, large... I forget they're there since the big one is the star. What makes the composition so pleasant... None get to face perfectly forward, most are falling off the canvas... I can imagine the rest of the sunflower patch continuing.
Thanks for the lesson.
