Two Tomatoes

Two Tomatoes
6x8 Original Oil on Wrap Around Canvas
by Cheri Wollenberg

Well, I lost the race!  My husband and I were in a race to raise the first tomato of the year.  I opted to get the "new" upside down "cherry" tomato version (laugh - it was the most creative), and he went with the regular "beefy" one that gets large.  I (without telling him) fertilized mine...but he won anyway.  We had a feast on his tomato by making tomato and bacon sandwiches...ummmmmm.  I was inspired to paint tomatoes again.  Every year I paint tomatoes when they become ripe in harvest.  They are lovely to look at.  They have such beauty in their texture and color.  Just by previous experiences of eating them, a visual memory brings my mouth to water.  Hopefully this little composition will do the same......bring a memory of a previous, sensual experience that includes the beauty, the red color, the texture and taste of the simple tomato.

Wildflowers and Black-Eyed Susans

Carpet of Black-Eyed Susans
in Oklahoma

There are some years that wildflowers grow “wildly” and so abundant that they cover the earth as a carpet. These years are so visually exciting. It is like manna (a Biblical term for miraculous food) to an artist. As my husband and I were traveling on a trip to our farm home the black-eyed susans were so abundant that I had to stop several times to take resource pictures. It was enchanting! I never tire of seeing these beauties in my home state of Oklahoma.

Cow Painting of Charlene

Charlene
12x12 Original Oil Painting by
Cheri Wollenberg

This painting features a young British White Cross that was on my son's ranch for a while. I think she is fine and I thought Charlene was a good name for her. She has an innocence about her, don't you think? She is set against a dark red background which seems to accentuate her white coat.

Three Pears with Dramatic Background

Three Dramatic Pears
by Cheri Wollenberg
I have to admit....I'm easily diverted from one subject to the next. My real problem is being constantly inspired by everything!! Certain colors, shapes, compositions (abstract or realistic),patterns everywhere are all sparking my creative juices. I can't keep up, but I'll share some of the things that I am doing. Pears are such sensational fruit to paint. Artists paint them in endless styles. In this particular arrangement I decided to create an dramatic mood. The composition is of three formally balanced pears with an extreme, dark background. They are placed on a black surface and as the light hits them, the yellows of the pears reflect onto one another and onto the surface. The darks of the surface actually refract or reflect back onto the pears throwing orange up on them. So exciting! The format of 6x18 establishes the mood further and it is painted on the sides. It is a simple painting that is very exciting and after the style of early masters. I loved painting them. I'll probably paint them again. Drinking Coffee! Painting Cups and Saucers?

Blue and White Polka Dots
Original Oil Painting
6x8 Wrap Around Canvas

Drinking coffee is a pleasurable experience, wouldn't you say? Why is it? This morning I tried to think of how I would describe these habitual moments that take place often in my life. I love the aroma, the flavor, and the warmth (especially in the wintertime). Then of course - it gets me going. Is this the buzz? The little coffee cup above is one of several that I have painted in the last couple of months. It is also pleasurable to smell the aroma of paint, to visually see something interesting, to load a brush with oil paint and place on the canvas, and then get the "buzz" from something that brings together an assortment of the elements of art like pieces of a puzzle into something very pleasing and generating. Which is the most "habit forming"? I cannot tell.............
